2015 Major League Soccer
regular season Recap
by Bryan G.
Major League Soccer just recently had their 19th season featuring 20 teams split up into two conferences. Two of those teams are debuting in the league this year; Orlando City and New York City. The MLS has been growing more and more, and is beginning to become competitive with the European leagues as well. Many stars from the European leagues came to MLS this year such as Kaka, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Giovani Dos Santos, and Didier Drogba. I would consider this one of the most anticipated seasons yet.
The season kicked off on March 6th, and is in the playoffs now. Here are the final standings and statistics: http://www.mlssoccer.com/standings
As you can see, the New York Red Bulls won the Supporters Shield. They have some great talent on their squad such as Bradley Wright Phillips, Sacha Kljestan, and Luis Robles. Also, Montreal Impact made a huge comeback from 9th to 3rd place towards the end of the season. This was probably because of Didier Drogba who transferred from Chelsea from England. The Seattle Sounders, one of the favorites, who have an average attendance of 44,000 a game, made a comeback after losing some good players to the Gold Cup, which features the best teams in North America. The Portland Timbers have also made the playoffs and have never won an MLS cup. I am rooting for them because although they aren't the favorites, they have a decent squad with players such as Diego Valeri, Fanendo Adi, and Darlington Nagbe.
Overall, this season was a big one, with surprises and some big transfers from Europe. But for the most part, it was about making soccer more popular in America, which is just what was done.
